How do you apply?
- The application for a residence permit is submitted to the competent Police Headquarters , often via postal kit or appointment.
- You must submit documents such as your passport, visa (if applicable), photo, electronic permit, and specific documentation for the type of permit requested, such as an employment contract, school enrollment, or family-related documentation.
- The length of a residence permit varies depending on the reasons and type of permit; for example, for work-related reasons, it may be tied to the length of the contract.
- The electronic residence permit is issued on average 60 days after the application is submitted.
Types of residence permits:There are different types of residence permits, including:
- Work: Subordinate, self-employed, seasonal.
- Study: For study or training purposes.
- Family reasons: Family reunification, adoption, etc.
- Medical treatment: For health reasons.
- Asylum Request: For those seeking international protection.
- International protection: For refugees or holders of subsidiary protection.
- EU long-term residence permit: For those who have legally resided in Italy for at least 5 years.
Costs:
- The electronic residence permit costs €30.46, payable to the indicated postal account.
- A variable fee is added based on the length of the permit requested: 40 euros for permits up to one year, 50 euros for permits up to two years, and 100 euros for long-term permits or for managers and specialized workers.
Exceptions:
- A residence permit is not required for European Union citizens.
- Some non-EU citizens are exempt, such as citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, San Marino, and British citizens who were already permanently resident in Italy before Brexit.
