UN INTERN EXPERIENCE
Meeting Summary
In this meeting, we talked about the difference between UN staff members and consultants. I learned that consultants are considered independent contractors, not official UN employees. Because of this, consultants living in Italy may have to follow normal Italian tax rules and could be subject to income tax and VAT requirements depending on their work situation.
We also reviewed an FAO consultant contract. The contract explained the consultant's responsibilities, travel policies, confidentiality requirements, termination rules, and tax obligations. One of the main takeaways was that a consultant's contract status is important because it can affect how they are treated for tax purposes in Italy.
Overall, the meeting focused on how consultant status differs from staff status and how that difference can impact taxes and legal obligations.
